Mexico’s Security Crisis: Will Iguala Be a Wake-Up Call?
From an outsider’s perspective, Peña Nieto’s two years in office have yielded historic change. Indeed, great potential exists for increased investment, economic growth, and job creation in Mexico, which is good not only for Mexico but also for the United States. However, from the point of view of Mexicans, all of that opportunity can be squandered by a failure to deal with the unfinished business of security. Mexico’s security problems will not be resolved overnight. However, Mexicans do expect a more energetic commitment and a clearer security strategy—on par with economic initiatives—that will relegate incidents such as what happened in Iguala to a tragic part of history.
