Private Disability Insurance Option Could Help Save SSDI and Improve Individual Well-being
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is on course to run out of money in 2016 as rapid expansion in the program has caused benefits to exceed incoming revenues for years. Immediate action is needed to improve the solvency and integrity of the program. As part of a comprehensive SSDI reform package, policymakers should consider allowing employers the option of providing private disability insurance in exchange for a reduction in payroll taxes. Private disability insurance has the potential to reduce costs and improve integrity within the SSDI system, and to improve outcomes for disabled individuals.
