The Impact of ISIS on Global Salafism and South Asian Jihad

ISIS’ appeal has generated an uneven response: it has resonated more with individuals than with groups, more with newly evolving Salafi jihadist outfits than with longstanding ones, and far more in Europe, North Africa and Central Asia than in South Asia. The reasons associated with ISIS’ relative underperformance in South Asia tells us a lot about ISIS’ innate weakness as a serious challenger to al-Qaeda.
