There were no “buts” with Nat Hentoff.
When news of his death at age 91 came out last weekend, headlines described him as an “acclaimed writer” and a “renowned columnist.” He certainly was, but CNN also used the word “edgy” to describe the man who wrote for the Village Voice for 50 years. And with good reason: Hentoff didn’t simply pay lip service to the First Amendment. He meant what he said.
