The Sewall-Belmont House is a small museum in Washington, D.C., that celebrates the history of women’s struggles for political equality. But for many of the capital’s politicos, the house is primarily a venue for hob-knobbing with supporters willing to pay $1,000 a plate. No wonder, then, that legislators have been happy to give the museum $3.4 million in earmarked taxpayer funds over the past decade.
