Ever since the Surgeon General began talking about an "epidemic of obesity," it was clear that the latest health-related "war" that Americans would have to worry about was to be a war on fat. As this paper describes, the lasting legacy of a war on fat will be both a much fatter government and a much thinner citizenry. The government will be fatter through its expanded power to shape inappropriately the lives of its citizens and the citizenry will be thinner in its capacity for choice, self-government and personal responsibility.
