While undoubtedly supporters of universal health care in Maine are well meaning, their proposal, nevertheless, could have serious harmful consequences for all citizens. If history is any indication, a single-payer initiative will end up costing much more than advocates claim. That, in turn, would lead to higher taxes and/or rationing under which a state health board would determine which medical treatments and prescription drugs would and would not be covered.
